Black garlic Nigrum - 3 pcs.

The ornamental Black Garlic (Allium nigrum), also known as the broad-leaved leek, develops – rather surprisingly taken into account its name – white blooms. These plants develop long, vividly green leaves and grow 60 – 70 cm in favourable conditions. This species blooms from May to to June and its blooms retain their exceptional ornamental value for a long time. They take on the form of a semi-spherical umbel consisting of numerous small flowers. These white, star shaped blooms have green centres. Black garlic looks stunning planted in groups on lawns or among low perennials and ornamental grasses. Its blooms stay fresh in vases for a long time, hence may be grown for cut flowers.

Bulbs of the ornamental black garlic should be planted to the ground in autumn. Choose a sunny spot in the garden. This species likes the sun, but tolerates partial shade, too. A sandy-clay, slightly calciferous and nutritious soil would suit it well. Plant Allium nigrum bulbs ca. 15 cm deep in 15-20 cm distances. These frost resistant plants winter well in the ground.
