The Red canna lily is a wonderful plant that offers a touch of exotic for your garden, terrace, or balcony. Its high ornamental value comes from magnificent, long, ear-shaped flower clusters that are surrounded by large, oval, lush green leaves. Every gardener can start growing canna lily in a warm and bright room in March. Rhizomes planted at that time in fertile soil in pots will develop into a strong seedlings and bloom earlier than the specimens planted directly into the ground. Do not transplant canna lilies outside before mid-May. Canna lilies have a long growing season, and therefore cannot always fully develop in Central European climate. Planting rhizomes directly in the ground may bring less spectacular effects, but it is an option for some gardeners who have no possibility to grow seedlings.

Canna lily prefers sunny places, although it will also grow in partial shade. In the latter site, the flowering might be less abundant. Water and fertilize canna lilies regularly, particularly during the periods of intensive growth. Remove faded flowers to extend the flowering period.

Canna lily, as a species, is sensitive to cold and does not winter in the ground in European climate zones. If you want to keep the plant, dig out the rhizome in autumn and store inside until next spring.
