Round-headed leek (Allium rotundum) is a bulbous perennial that develops numerous, decorative inflorescences that take on the typical shape for this species. Single, gutter-shaped leaves sprout from the bulbs. They are sually flat and narrow. Naked, erect, straight stems appear later. Round, spherical inflorescences develop atop of them at the end of spring. Each of those consists of several dozens of single, small, radially symmetrical flowers. These inflorescences are deeply crimson with a hint of plum and dark red. A white edge might appear on the blooms. This magnificent ornamental plant fits into every garden.

Round-headed leek, or purple-flowered garlic, as this plant is also called, grows medium tall, hence fits ideally onto perennial border edgings and alongside paths. It looks great combined with groupings of other bulbous plants. This plant add charm to naturalistic arrangements. The unusual form of the inflorescences attracts attention, hence fits into representative spots that need additional ornaments. Removing the wilted inflorescences stimulates and extends the repeated blooming.

Ornamental Allium cultivars are undemanding. They are recommended for sunny and partially shady spots. They also positively influences sites with dispersed light. They prefer sandy-clay, moderately fertile and humid soils. None of the ornamental Alliums tolerates waterlogging. They get ill and die off quickly in such conditions. Should you intend to plant these plans in have soils, make sure you use the gravel drainage. Water the plants during the season in the extended drought periods and heat waves. These frost resistant plants do not need to be excavated from the ground in autumn.
