The Elwes's fritillary is a relatively unknown plant. It is still not common in gardens and may become an interesting collector's item in the future. This is a low growing plant with inconspicuous foliage and flowers that are described as "dusted". The species offered here is frost resistant and tolerates drier sites.

The slender leaves of the Elwes's fritillary take on a bluish colour and grow up to 40 cm tall. The are narrow, grass shaped and irregularly positioned on the stems. The flowers of this particular fritillary droop from the tops of slender stalks. They take on a shape of elongated bells. They are medium large and usually gathered in groups of three on one stem. The purple-brown or crimson flowers are covered with a waxy coating that is responsible for the above mentioned dusty look. The lighter, contrasting stripes run through the middle of the petals. This small, charming plant has a subdued colouring.

Almost all fritillaries prefer sunny sites, even though they would grow at other places, too. This species grows in forests in the wild and its cultivars display higher tolerance to shade, too. The soil should be rather dry, equipped with a proper drainage layer and fertile.

This plant should be predominantly grown on the front of flower beds and on edgings. The Elwes's fritillary will also fit into rock gardens with its somewhat wild appearance. It looks good in naturalistic plantings on lawn edges. It may be grown in containers filled with coarse, sandy soil.

Each package contains 50 bulbs of the Elwes's fritillary, sized 5 to 6 cm in circumference.
