The "Barbados" Hippeastrum, amaryllis is an exceptionally attractive variety that develops dark red flowers with characteristic white stripes that run through the middle of the petals. These flowers develop already six to eight weeks after you have planted the bulbs. Blooms grow atom sturdy stems that might grow 50 to 60 centimetres tall. Amaryllis, as this plant is also called, belongs to the most popular bulb flowers that are grown in pots. It is widely used as interior decoration and cut flower. You can grow it on a balcony or terrace during warmer periods.

Plant amaryllis bulbs in pots whose diameter is not significantly larger than the diameter of the bulb. Make sure to leave one third of the bulb above the ground. Use permeable soil and an additional drainage layer. Do not let the soil dry out, but water plants sparsely. Limit watering after flowers have wilted. It should stimulate plants to go into dormancy stage that should last six to eight weeks. After the leaves have partially dried out, trim them a few centimetres over the bulb. Transfer plants to a dry and cool place. You can also dig out bulbs and store them in dry peat.
