The Italian arum (Arum italicum) constitutes a unique garden decoration all year long. This sturdy, shade-loving perennial develops beautiful, dark green, arrow shaped leaves with a contrasting light green pattern on the surface. The medium tall, 40 to 60 centimetres, thick and strong flowering stalks shoot from the impressive leaf rosettes. Single, small yellow cobs surrounded by pale green sheaths develop atop of them in May. The flowers later develop into decorative bright red fruit. They measure about 1 centimetre in diameter and slightly resemble rowan berries. These fruit are gathered into a large, broad and highly decorative cob.
The marvellous Italian arum should be planted in autumn, in September and October, 6 to 15 centimetres deep. They require humous, constantly moist soils, preferably with slightly alkaline reaction. They like shade and partial shade, do not grow them in situations that are fully exposed to sunlight for the majority of the day. They feel great in vicinity of water reservoirs, under trees, where they can be arranged into magnificent compositions with the shade-loving hostas and ferns. Their unique habit and fruit, as well as beautiful leaves will look beautiful in such a setting. We recommend to cover younger specimens with spruce twigs, the older ones survive frost very well.
