Red-capped scaber stalk mycelium is a proposal for mushroom gourmets and gardeners who would love to take on this unusual challenge. We offer organic spawn on grain for planting in your own garden. Provided you choose the right site and allow the fungi to develop in symbiosis with broad-leaved trees, you will harvest large, tasty and decorative fruit bodies of the red-capped scaber stalk for the next 4 years. Cultivation of the edible forest mushrooms in our climate conditions is quick and easy. You only need to purchase high quality mycelium and follow the producer's instructions.

Red-capped scaber stalk (Leccinum aurantiacum) is a species with particularly decorative fruit bodies. They usually grow 8 - 20 cm tall and their beautiful, brick-red, convex caps sit atop straight, club-shaped white stems covered with brown scabers. The cap that reaches 5 - 15 cm in diameter is covered with smooth skin, that is velvety on younger specimens. Red-capped scaber stalk consists of delicious flesh that is compact, firm and exudes subtle aroma. You may serve the fruit bodies dried, steamed, fried or stewed, in preserves, sauces and soups.

The species presented here is mycorrhizal with broad-leaved trees in the wild. It usually grows with poplars, willows and aspens. Therefore we recommend to plant the mycelium in near vicinity (0.5 - 5 m) of one of the above mentioned species or any other young deciduous tree. You may start the culture in spring, summer or even early in autumn. Dig three holes, approximately 30 cm wide and 15 cm deep, fill them in one third with permeable garden soil mixed with peat. Spread one third of the spawn on it, cover with the rest of the soil, tamp it down and water abundantly. We also recommend to cover the site with thick layer of forest mulch - moss, needles, leaves or small branches. Additional care measures include only watering in summer drought periods. You may harvest the crops from June to November in the second, or even first year of cultivation. Red-capped scaber stalk is resistant to frosts.

The package contains ground biological spawn (mycelium) on grain. Detailed growing instructions have been included in the package information. The producer estimates the probability of successful red-capped scaber stalk development for 85 - 87%. The emergence of mushrooms depends on the environmental conditions and proper site preparation: please remember that red-capped scaber stalk grows in vicinity of the deciduous trees in the wild.

Exclusion of the middlemen from the whole process not only makes it possible for us to avoid sending out-of-date seeds that might have been lying too long on a warehouse shelf, but also ensures the most attractive price for top quality products.

The quality control process

All our seeds must pass a four-stage quality control process.

Stage one begins with a careful selection of the suppliers. Than we proceed with controlling their crops, foreign producers are not excluded from the quality control process. Plants are checked at every stage of their development: when they start to grow, during blooming and when they start bearing fruit (seeds). At this stage the most important thing is to ensure proper spacing of the plants. Thanks to that obtaining the desired morphological characteristics of each particular species or variety, such as colour, height and shape, can be ensured.

Stage two consists of a detailed verification tests in laboratory conditions. With the use of the highest quality equipment by the highly qualified staff, our suppliers perform more than 30 000 quality checks annually. The seeds that do not meet our requirements are subject to technological refining processes, including drying, cleaning, upgrading and testing again.

Stage three starts with sowing seeds in selected control plots. That way we obtain valuable, exact information concerning their germination that must be maintained at an appropriate level. Simultaneously, the varietal identity of each species is checked at this stage.

Stage four takes place in our warehouses and consists of eliminating seeds that have been stored for too long on our shelves and replacing them with new batches. Each package is stamped with a unique batch number and also with the sow-by-date.

All four stages combined allow us to state with confidence that the seeds we deliver comply with the highest standards and have completed all required control stages with flying colours.
