Rough-stemmed bolete mycelium is the one and only cultivation starter kit allowing you to grow delicious and healthy mushrooms in your own garden. The offered species, well known to mushroom pickers, tastes great dried, stewed, cooked and in preserves. Young, firm, tenderly tasting and aromatic fruit bodies constitute a true culinary rarity, that you can harvest at your allotment after planting the mycelium, preferably close to young birch trees. The mushrooms will start to appear in the second year and will continue to do so in the next 3 - 5 years.

Scaber stalk (Leccinum scabrum), as this fungus is also called, is a characteristic, relatively small mushroom that grows 10 - 20 cm tall and 5 - 15 cm in cap diameter. White, slender, firm stem of the fruit body is broader at the base and covered with tiny, grey, coarse scales. Thick, pillow-like cap looks like an open umbrella: it has smooth, dry, but sticky after the rain, grey-brown, sometimes red-brown skin. The tubes and pores visible on the underside of the cap take on stained white or pale grey colour. White-greyish flesh of the birch bolete, as this mushroom is regionally called, compact and tender in the younger specimens, fits well into vegetarian and meat dishes.

This species grows rather commonly in the wild in broad-leaved forests that consist mostly of birches. Its fruit bodies can be picked from June to October. Please remember, however, that the large mushrooms are often attacked by worms. Growing rough-stemmed boletes in your own garden allows you to pick them when they are still young, hence delicious and free from pests. Plant the spawn of this species on warm days between mid-April and mid-October. You only need to dig three 15-cm-deep holes 0.5 - 5 m away from a birch trunk. Put permeable garden soil mixed with peat and 1/3 of the spawn into each hole. Cover the hole with the rest of the soil, tamp down and abundantly water around the site of planting. In order to make sure that the fungi will develop properly you may also 'feed' the mycelium with sugar solution. Use a mixture of 10 g sugar with 10 l of water for watering. The last step is covering the culture with a thick layer of natural forest mulch.

Rough-stemmed bolete commonly grows in Central European climate conditions. It bears rich crops and is easy in cultivation. If you plan to start your adventure with cultivation of mycorrhizal forest mushrooms, you should choose exactly this species.

The package contains ground biological spawn (mycelium) on grain. Detailed growing instructions have been included in the package information. The producer estimates the probability of successful rough-stemmed bolete development for 85 - 87%. The emergence of mushrooms depends on the environmental conditions and proper site preparation: rough-stemmed bolete grows in mycorrhiza with birch trees. It also needs watering in the longer summer drought periods.

Exclusion of the middlemen from the whole process not only makes it possible for us to avoid sending out-of-date seeds that might have been lying too long on a warehouse shelf, but also ensures the most attractive price for top quality products.

The quality control process

All our seeds must pass a four-stage quality control process.

Stage one begins with a careful selection of the suppliers. Than we proceed with controlling their crops, foreign producers are not excluded from the quality control process. Plants are checked at every stage of their development: when they start to grow, during blooming and when they start bearing fruit (seeds). At this stage the most important thing is to ensure proper spacing of the plants. Thanks to that obtaining the desired morphological characteristics of each particular species or variety, such as colour, height and shape, can be ensured.

Stage two consists of a detailed verification tests in laboratory conditions. With the use of the highest quality equipment by the highly qualified staff, our suppliers perform more than 30 000 quality checks annually. The seeds that do not meet our requirements are subject to technological refining processes, including drying, cleaning, upgrading and testing again.

Stage three starts with sowing seeds in selected control plots. That way we obtain valuable, exact information concerning their germination that must be maintained at an appropriate level. Simultaneously, the varietal identity of each species is checked at this stage.

Stage four takes place in our warehouses and consists of eliminating seeds that have been stored for too long on our shelves and replacing them with new batches. Each package is stamped with a unique batch number and also with the sow-by-date.

All four stages combined allow us to state with confidence that the seeds we deliver comply with the highest standards and have completed all required control stages with flying colours.

Germination

We are committed to selling only the highest quality seeds. Taking into consideration the efforts we make daily, please also note that plants are living organisms and their germination and growth depends on many factors, such as temperature, soil type, humidity and the frequency with that they are watered, sowing time and conditions, use of fertilizers and plant protection agents (pesticides), as well as weather and climate conditions. We provide help by sharing the accurate and up-to-date sowing and growing information, however, we cannot bear any responsibility for the plants that were not cultivated in conditions appropriate for given species.
