The Gala belongs to the most popular potato varieties in Central Europe and is widely available in stores, in most cases pre-packed. This early potato can be stored for a long time without any loss to its taste and other properties. The oval, regular shape of the tubers and shallow buds on the skin allow machine peeling of Gala potatoes. Yellow flesh and light brown skin give the variety an attractive appearance, while the taste was rated as very good. Compact structure of the flesh, which does not discolour during and after boiling, also belongs to the advantages of the presented variety. Food processing industry commonly uses Gala potatoes, but it is also a regular in homes. The variety classified as type AB or B is perfect for salads, casseroles, soups, and classic potato dumplings and gnocchi. It tastes great as a side dish, boiled cubed, or mashed into a hearty purée.

The date of planting potatoes depends primarily on the temperature. In warm regions, you can plant as early as mid-April, in colder areas it is possible only in the first half of May. Potatoes need plenty of light, so it is necessary to plant them at sunny sites. Plants do not need much water at first, yet that demand rises rapidly during the period of intensive growth and tuber formation. Potato cultivation brings best results in well-cultivated soil with balanced air and water conditions. Sandy-clay soil that warms quickly promotes quick and healthy tuber growth. Potatoes require fertilization, both before planting and during the growing season. It is best to use natural fertilisers, manure and compost.
