Tomato "Luban" (Lycopersicon esculentum) is a field, vividly red, medium early variety on wich fruit the greenback does not appear. It is valued for the high quality of the fruit and reliable crops. It yields rich harvest even under cool and wet weather. High resistance to disease is also of essence. This dwarf variety takes on a loose habit of slender stems. The fruit grow quite large and may weigh from 120 to 140 g, with a diameter of at least 6 cm. They are round or slightly flattened, without the green shoulders. Both the flesh and peel of the ripe tomatoes take on bright red colour. Firm and fleshy, delicious berries are intended for direct consumption after the harvest. They are also fitted for preserves, predominantly purees.
The "Luban" tomato belongs to few tomato cultivars that may be grown from direct sow to the ground. In that case sowing time depends on the soil temperature that should at least be 12°C. Growing tomato from seedlings produced in a heated room is considered a more reliable method. Seedlings are transplanted outside in the second half of May, when the risk of spring frosts is over. Tomatoes grow best and yield richest harvest under high air and soil temperature. Fruit that ripen in the sun show better quality and taste. These plants may be grown on lesser soils, but require proper fertilisation in such case.
