Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is a plant of the legume (Fabaceae) family that has been cultivated as pasture plant for centuries. It delivers high-protein fodder that is also rich in macro and micro nutrients, carotene and vitamins. These tall plants quickly develop the main stem with smaller side stems densely covered with dark green foliage. Purple blooms are rich in nectar, what allows us to treat alfalfa as an important melliferous plant. This species stands out with high durability and may be grown on one site for 3 - 4 years. It also stands out with quick growth and rapid regrowth after mowing. Therefore it belongs to the most productive fodder plants. One should not forget its role as green fertiliser. Alfalfa rests left on the field provide the soil with nutrients, organic matter and improve soil structure.

Alfalfa develops well in warm climate, it likes higher temperatures and periodic water shortages do not hurt it. It belongs to rare pasture plants that bring rich crops on dry soils. Cultivated varieties also show excellent hardiness. Permeable, aerated, moderately moist soil fits cultures of the alfalfa variety mix best. The soil should also have an alkaline or neutral reaction. Acidic soils need to be calcified before seeding alfalfa. This usually occurs in spring, although you may sow in summer to. Please note, however, that plants sown early enough develop stronger root systems, what ensures better wintering and richer crops. Lucerne, as this plant is also called, may be cut multiple times. The frequency depends on the cultivation conditions, but up to 4 - 5 cuttings during a season could be possible. We hereby offer an alfalfa seed selection consisting of the following cultivars: "Algonquin" 30%, "Plato" 40%, "La bella campagnola" 30%. Seeding rate in case of a pure sow is 20-25 kg/ha.

One package contains 10 kg of the alfalfa variety mix seeds. The sow-by date has been printed on the package.

The quality control process

All our seeds must pass a four-stage quality control process.

Stage one begins with a careful selection of the suppliers. Than we proceed with controlling their crops, foreign producers are not excluded from the quality control process. Plants are checked at every stage of their development: when they start to grow, during blooming and when they start bearing fruit (seeds). At this stage the most important thing is to ensure proper spacing of the plants. Thanks to that obtaining the desired morphological characteristics of each particular species or variety, such as colour, height and shape, can be ensured.

Stage two consists of a detailed verification tests in laboratory conditions. With the use of the highest quality equipment by the highly qualified staff, our suppliers perform more than 30 000 quality checks annually. The seeds that do not meet our requirements are subject to technological refining processes, including drying, cleaning, upgrading and testing again.

Stage three starts with sowing seeds in selected control plots. That way we obtain valuable, exact information concerning their germination that must be maintained at an appropriate level. Simultaneously, the varietal identity of each species is checked at this stage.

Stage four takes place in our warehouses and consists of eliminating seeds that have been stored for too long on our shelves and replacing them with new batches. Each package is stamped with a unique batch number and also with the sow-by-date.

All four stages combined allow us to state with confidence that the seeds we deliver comply with the highest standards and have completed all required control stages with flying colours.
