The Dr Brouwer agapanthus is a rhizomous perennial with long narrow leaves and a large umbel of blue flowers that sits on a tall stalk. This phenomenal perennial plant starts to bloom late in spring. The growth form of the presented plant intrigues all those who watch it even when it is flower-less. A tuft of grass-like, fleshy, shiny, juicy green leaves looks exceptionally well in pots and planters in the garden.  A cluster of blue bell-shaped flowers stands out from native European blooms with its undeniable exotic charm. Planters with African lilies, as this plant is commonly called, are a wonderful decoration of the entrance, a terrace, or a balcony. Presented plant looks equally charming under a gazebo wall or at a place of relaxation. Agapanthus flowers can be cut and arranged in elegant bouquets. Clusters of blue flowers attract insects who eagerly visit them.

The rhizomes should be planted on borders and in planters at a sunny situation or in partial shade. Agapanthus requires a fertile, permeable yet moist soil. Applying a thick drainage layer at the bottom of planting holes and pots is a must. Fleshy, long roots tend to rot in waterlogging soil. Plants of the presented species need to be fertilized regularly, at first with nitrogen-rich plant food, then with more potassium and phosphorus. This combination allows to grow vigorous plants that abundantly produce vividly coloured flowers. Agapanthus does not belong to plants that can be left outside in the winter. Planting it in containers that you can take inside and store in a bright room, is the best solution. Reduce watering to a minimum level during the winter dormancy.
