The "Zazrak of Kelvedon" field pea, also known as "Kelvedon Wonder" is an old variety that enjoys unchanged popularity. Dwarf plants that grow no taller than 60 cm spread broadly and produce green, circa 8 cm long pods filled with five to eight seeds. These pea bushes are resistant to diseases and lodging, what significantly facilitates cultivation. The vegetation period of this variety varies from 70 to 80 days.

Annual field pea is grown both for the sweet fresh pods and dry seeds. The plants that supply you with valuable crops absorb nitrogen from the air and fertilize the soil. The variety offered here produces wrinkled seeds. They are moderately sweet and tender in taste. We recommend to eat the not fully ripened seeds as a healthy snack. The younger pods can be eaten whole. A string that develops as the pods ripen, negatively affects their taste. The fact that the seeds do not change colour after cooking is considered a big advantage of this field pea.

Field pea requires a sandy-loam, permeable, airy and quickly warming up soil. The soil should also have regulate air-water conditions and contain sufficient amounts of lime and humus. Both soil and air humidity should be maintained at moderate level. Watering proves to be essential for successful cultivation. Do not forget to water the plants during the critical development stages, such as flowering, pod and seed development. Pea is sensitive to acidic soil. Neither sandy and dry, nor too moist soil is appropriate for growing pea.

Seeds of this ancient vegetable should be sown from March to mid April. The plants that are not too sensitive to low temperatures germinate after circa 10 days. Grow peas in rows 15 to 20 cm apart. Sow the seeds 5 to 6 cm deep, into holes every 5 cm.

Pea belongs to nutritional and valuable veggies. It contains vitamins A, C, E and K, as well some of the B group. It also contains numerous minerals, such as zinc, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, calcium and iron. Pea should be used in deacidifying diet. It can be eaten by people suffering from diabetes as a plant with a low glycaemic index. It also shows some anticancer properties.

The quality control process

All our seeds must pass a four-stage quality control process.

Stage one begins with a careful selection of the suppliers. Than we proceed with controlling their crops, foreign producers are not excluded from the quality control process. Plants are checked at every stage of their development: when they start to grow, during blooming and when they start bearing fruit (seeds). At this stage the most important thing is to ensure proper spacing of the plants. Thanks to that obtaining the desired morphological characteristics of each particular species or variety, such as colour, height and shape, can be ensured.

Stage two consists of a detailed verification tests in laboratory conditions. With the use of the highest quality equipment by the highly qualified staff, our suppliers perform more than 30 000 quality checks annually. The seeds that do not meet our requirements are subject to technological refining processes, including drying, cleaning, upgrading and testing again.

Stage three starts with sowing seeds in selected control plots. That way we obtain valuable, exact information concerning their germination that must be maintained at an appropriate level. Simultaneously, the varietal identity of each species is checked at this stage.

Stage four takes place in our warehouses and consists of eliminating seeds that have been stored for too long on our shelves and replacing them with new batches. Each package is stamped with a unique batch number and also with the sow-by-date.

All four stages combined allow us to state with confidence that the seeds we deliver comply with the highest standards and have completed all required control stages with flying colours.
