Black garlic (Allium nigrum) that is also called broad-leaved leek or broadleaf garlic develops, contrary to its name, white flowers. Its plants develop long, vividly green leaves. The plants reach height of 60 to 70 cm in optimal conditions. This species blooms from May to June and the plants retain their ornamental value for a long time. The inflorescences take on a semi spherical umbel shape and consist of numerous small single blooms. These white star-shaped flowers have green centres. The black garlic looks wonderful in groupings on lawns and among low growing perennials and ornamental grasses. Its flowers are surprisingly durable in the vase, so it can also be grown for cut flowers.
The bulbs of the black garlic should be planted in autumn in the sunny part of the garden. This species loves exposure to sun, but tolerates partial shade. A sandy-loam, lime and rich soil suits it best. It should be permeable, yet not to dry. Plant the Allium nigrum bulbs circa 15 cm deep and 15 to 20 cm apart. these frost resistant plants winter in the ground.
Ornamental onion or garlic bulbs are actually cloves. It is absolutely normal that they look like split in halves or smaller parts. A beautiful plant will develop from each small flat bulb.
Each package contains 30 bulbs of the black garlic - Allium nigrum - sized 14 to 16 cm in circumference.
