Cogongrass "Red Baron" (Imperata cylindrica) is a splendid ornamental grass whose straws are red. It grows rather slowly and its height does not exceed 40-60 cm. It develops tufts of erect, sword-shaped leaves that attract attention through their unusual colouring. In the spring only the tips of the foliage are red and contrast nicely with the juicy green of the rest of the plant. The red colouring spreads with time to cover the majority of the petioles at the end. In autumn the tufts turn scarlet-red. This plant ideally fits onto borders, into rock gardens and would also thrive in containers as balcony or terrace decoration.

This grass requires sunny or only partially shady site, because its leaves will not change colours in the shade. Plant "Red Baron" cogongrass rhizomes directly to the ground in the middle of spring. The soil needs to be fertile and constantly moist, but you need to take care of the proper drainage. These plants survive periodical droughts well. This species is frost resistant, but should be covered before the winter in the colder regions.
