Marjoram (Origanum majorana) is an annual seasoning plant with a very characteristic aroma. It grows 20 - 30 cm tall. Marjoram leaves are covered with a delicate tomentose. White or reddish blooms gathered in spherical inflorescences appear on the tops of the stems. Fresh or dried marjoram greens are uses to season soups, sauces, salads, fish, legumes and meat dishes. It also fits into marinades and may fragrance vinegars, oils and liquers. An essential oil used by the pharmaceutical industry is made of the overground marjoram parts. Medicine utilises marjoram in healing respiratory and digestive system diseases. Its greens contain taurine, vitamin C and carotenes.
Marjoram may be grown successfully in containers at home or on a balcony. Its seeds are sown to pots or balcony boxes in the second half of April, preferably into standard garden soil. You should place 2-3 marjoram seeds per hole. The sprouting occurs already after 1 - 2 weeks in the home cultures. Marjoram grows best on sunny sites in consistently moist soil. You will harvest marjoram two times in a season - in July and in September - by topping the plant approximately 10 - 15 cm above the soil level.
