Garden Ferns - the Japanese painted fern (Athyrium niponicum) is a species valued for its beautiful leaves. The plant grows up to about 40 centimetres tall and develops short rhizomes below the ground. The feathery leaves shoot from those underground parts. Leaf colour may change depending on the lighting and the season. Decorative fern leaves perfectly complement perennial beds and rock gardens. They belong to best options for a pond edge or any other water reservoir. Daring gardeners may even try growing Japanese painted fern in pots. Lack of flowers does not diminish the beauty of a fern at all. Planting those shade-loving plants with ornamental foliage allows to create magnificent arrangements in the garden.

Like most ferns, the Japanese painted fern prefers places that are not directly exposed to sunlight. It prefers acidic or neutral soil reaction. Its underground rhizomes allow it to winter in the ground without any problems. Trim the plants only in spring. Dry foliage protects them against low temperature and water loss.

We hereby offer one seedling of the Japanese painted fern of the Garden Ferns series. Basic plant facts and growing instructions were printed on the package label.
