Ithuriel's spear "Queen Fabiola" (Triteleia laxa, formerly: Brodiaea laxa) is an intriguing bulbous plant that may be grown as border decoration or pot flower. Triteleia, sometimes referred to as grassnut, is a perennial plant originating from North America. It usually grows 30 – 40 cm tall and develops dense tufts consisting of narrow leaves. Loose inflorescences tower over these tufts on long stalks. "Queen Fabiola" variety develops blue blooms, although depending on the exposure to sunlight and soil type their colour might change to purple-blue and even blue-white. Ithuriel's spear blooms appear in June and July. Triteleia is mostly used as border plant, for cut flowers or as an ornamental pot plant.

Bulbs of the ithuriel's spear may be planted into the ground from April to June. Choose a sunny, wind sheltered site, because the colouring of the blooms would become paler in shady spots. The soil needs to be permeable, humous and rich in nutrients. We recommend to fertilize the plant with special fertilizer for bulbous plants after the flowers have wilted. It would strengthen and regenerate the bulbs, so they could produce even more exuberant blooms next season. This species is not completely frost resistant – you would need to either dig out or cautiously cover the bulbs before winter.
