Starfish iris (Ferraria crispa) is an extraordinary plant, known for its characteristic star-shaped flowers. They dazzle both with their shape and wavy petals that take on an intriguing colouring – creamy white blooms are decorated with small, brown dots. This plant grows up to 30 cm tall. Blooming of this plant that originates from Africa takes place during summer months. This is an exceptional ornamental garden plant, although it is also recommended for cultivation in pots in Central European climate conditions.

Bulbs of the starfish lily, or black flag, as this plant is also commonly called, are planted in spring. This plant is extremely resistant to unfavourable conditions. It prefers sunny sites. The soil needs to be permeable, rich in nutrients and moderately moist. A soil with slightly acidic or neutral reaction would suit the starfish iris best. This plant does not belong to frost-resistant ones and its bulbs need to be excavated and stored in a room until spring.
