The yellow bighead knapweed (Centaurea macrocephala) is an easy-to-grow tall, melliferous perennial with high ornamental value. The plant assumes an erect and expanded habit, and its flowering shoots reach 100-120 cm in height. The stems are thick, stiff, densely covered with quite small, lanceolate, hairy leaves. Bighead knapweed, also known as, among other names, lemon fluff or yellow bachelor's button, produces numerous inflorescences that resemble thistle flowers, but much more decorative. The undeveloped floral bud resembles a bulky cone. As time passes, more and more narrow yellow petals appear at its peak. Therefore, the inflorescence initially looks like a head with a lush "hair", and then takes the form of a flower ball, tightly filled with needle-shaped petals. The unusual, magnificent Armenian basketflower (yet another name of this plant) is suitable for growing on beds and flower meadows - especially since it effectively attracts bees and other pollinators. It also works great as a cut, fresh and dried flower.
Seeds of bighead knapweed are sown onto a seedbed or at home from spring to the first half of summer. Plants can be transferred to the target position late in summer. Hardened perennials winter well in our climate and bloom generously every year, in July and August. The proposed species is rather undemanding - it will feel great at any sunny position with well-drained, medium fertile soil.
One package contains 1 g of bighead knapweed seeds. The sow-by date and growing instructions were printed at the back of the package.
