Crape Myrtle, also known as Crepe Myrtle, is a beautiful shrub or a small tree, which grows over a long time, 2 to 4 metres in height, with its bark peeling in a similar fashion to plane trees. The flowers are white, pink, red or purple, and make 20 centimetre-long inflorescences. Crape Myrtle is a very charming plant which is predominantly grown in pots on terraces and balconies; this plant is highly recommended for secluded parts of the garden.
Growing: sow the seeds in planter boxes or in covered pallet planters from March to April. In order to germinate, the seeds need to be kept at 22-25°C; they germinate in 3 to 5 weeks. The young plants should be planted out into containers or in covered sunny parts of the garden. The plants flower in the first year of cultivation, 5 to 6 months after the seeds have germinated. In the winter, the plants growing directly in the soil should be covered, while the ones in containers should be moved to a bright room kept at 0-10°C.
