Horned pansy "Johnny Jump Up" (Viola cornuta) is a short-lived perennial plant that is mostly grown as biennial in our climate. It forms loose, low tufts (10 - 25 cm tall) of crawling shoots. Its flowers resemble garden pansy blooms (Viola x wittrockiana), but are distinctly smaller. This plant is used on edgings and in rock gardens. Due to its small size it is also recommended for container cultivation. "Johnny Jump Up" variety develops nicely scenting, five petal, purple-white blooms with a yellow centre and purple dots on white petals. It blooms abundantly and long, from May until September. Horned pansy blooms do not only look and smell great, but are also edible and please our sense of taste with its sweet flavour. You may add them to vegetable and fruit salads, or use as dish garnish.

Horned violet, as this plant is commonly called, tolerates shady sites, where it blooms longer. You should plant it on fertile, moist and acidic soils. This plant is grown from seedlings, produced in the season before blooming. For this purpose, seeds are sown from May to July into containters or onto a seed bed. Seedlings are transplanted to the permanent site from July to October in 10-15 x 25 cm spacings. The plants start to bloom in the spring, but some of them might develop flowers already in November. Horned pansy may also be grown from winter direct sow to the ground in October and November. In this case seedlings appear in spring.
