Crocuses belong to the widely cultivated spring flowers. Even though they do not grow too tall, they have won hearts of many gardeners. The Herald variety belongs to the earliest blooming cultivars. It will shoot the first leaves already in February, when planted in autumn. Even a snow layer will not stop it. This crocus looks the most beautiful grown in larger groupings. It will also present its charm on single-species patches and in mixed colour plantings.

A flower produced by the Herald variety constitutes a unique colour combination. Its inner petals are brightly yellow. The outer three are dark crimson, almost brown. This intriguing set is framed by the narrow leaves with a smooth surface adorned with a light stripe that runs along them right through the middle.

Crocuses or croci, both plural descriptions are correct, like sunny situations. They feel well on borders and in lower rock gardens. They are sometimes planted on lawns that should not be cut too low in that case. Crocuses handle growing in planters well, so you will be able to create outstanding spring decorations with them. Since they are frost resistant, you can plant them in boxes and pots on a terrace.

Crocuses are not too demanding, but meeting some of their requirements brings excellent cultivation results. The soil should warm up quickly and be a permeable with a slightly acidic reaction. They do not like light, infertile and sandy soils.
