Garlic (Allium sativum) is a very valuable plant that is valued for its high culinary value and healing powers. It is very popular in home gardens. It is widely used in the kitchen and as remedy for many ailments – for those reasons it should grow in every garden. Garlic is easy to grow, even though it is a rather demanding plant.

Garlic should be planted early in spring or in autumn, but the plants that were planted in autumn yield better crops. Place the cloves 5 cm deep in the ground. This plant species has high requirements regarding the soil and prefers fertile soils that are rich in humus. The soil also needs to be permeable, yet water retaining. We recommend to grow garlic in the season after manure fertilization. Garlic has to be harvested when the foliage starts to wilt or when the first inflorescences develop.
