Choose a sunny site for them or a spot that remains in the shade for only a few hours daily. Lilies require a high quality, fertile soil that is rich in humus. Maintaining appropriate soil humidity is key in growing lilies. You should not let the ground dry out nor flood it with water. Setting up a drainage layer before planting of the bulbs and adding humus to the soil is therefore recommended. End of September and beginning of October and April in spring is the best time for planting lilies.
