'Red Giant' a low growing ornamental onion with a large flower cluster, is a truly spectacular plant. Its magnificent purple-red inflorescence that is surrounded with broad, silvery leaves constitutes an unmatched decoration. This wonderful flower will delight you during a slower period of garden vegetation. It perfectly fills the gap between the spring bulbous flowers and the abundance of annual flowers. Its marvellous flower balls look noble both on flower beds and in pots. These giant flower clusters bloom in June and July. 'Red Giant' belongs to varieties that remain ornamental even after the end of the flowering period. The flower cluster turns into an aggregate fruit that can be used in dry bouquets and arrangements.

Presented plant reaches a modest, compact size of 20 to 40 centimetres. It is therefore well suited for planting at the front of a flower bed. It can also be planted on edgings and in pots. Spherical flower clusters look wonderful in rock gardens and on surfaces covered with ornamental gravel or pebbles. Ornamental onion is a melliferous plant too. Its presence in the garden guarantees the company of butterflies and bees.

To make sure that the flowers will indeed be spectacular, plant this ornamental onion in a sunny situation in a permeable and fertile soil. Onion bulbs do not tolerate excessive moisture and prefer sites that do not waterlog. Ornamental onion grows best in a sandy or sandy-clay soil. The most beautiful specimens develop in cool and humid weather. This plant species likes to be fed with multicomponent fertilizers. Its distinct scent effectively repels rats and voles from the garden. Do not forget that leaves of the ornamental onion, like foliage of all bulbous plants, begin to wilt slowly after the plant starts to bloom. That is why we recommend growing this plant on spots where its bottom part will be covered by other species.

Onion bulbs should be planted in autumn, from September to November. The optimal planting depth is between 12 and 15 centimetres, while the distance between individual bulbs should be circa 12 centimetres.  This species winters well in the ground. It might require covering only in colder regions. It is recommended to transplant it to a new, more fertile site every three years.

The price is valid for one ornamental onion bulb sized 12/+. Basic plant information and growing tips were printed on the package.
