Proso millet is the most commonly cultivated millet variety. It is grown for its grain that is often fed to the birds. Sometimes it is used for green forage. We eat the grains, too, and admire its nutritional and dietetic values.

Proso millet is characterized by high requirements regarding temperature and light, but it does not need much water. It is very sensitive to lower temperatures. Seeds of the proso millet available in our store should be sown end of May. They would germinate in temperatures between 8 and 10 °C. Young plants may suffer even from small spring frosts. This species grows best in the temperature range of 20 to 30 °C. Rich harvest is to be expected in humous soil that needs to have a proper structure, reaction close to neutral and weeded. You should never grow this plant in cold, waterlogged or sandy soils.
