Broadleaf Speedwell - Veronica teucrium - Long lasting colour in the garden - Fresh Seeds

Broadleaf speedwell (Veronica teucrium) is a charming perennial that brings a clear splash of colour to planting areas. From the first days of flowering, it stands out with rich blue blooms held in slim, elegant spikes. It forms compact, dense clumps reaching around 30 cm tall and is ideal for borders, path edging, and rock gardens, where it creates a bright, lasting carpet. With a long flowering period from May to July, it keeps the garden lively for many weeks and also attracts bees and butterflies.

Sowing depth

Sow the seeds very thinly, to a depth of about 0.1 to 0.3 cm. A light covering of soil supports even emergence and healthy growth. This plant prefers a light, free draining soil, which helps seedlings establish smoothly.

Sowing time outdoors

The best time to sow outdoors is in autumn, from September to October. At this time the soil is still warm and moisture levels support germination. Plants can root well before winter and start strongly in spring, forming sturdy clumps.

Sowing time under cover

For sowing under cover, choose early spring from March to April. This can give you well developed young plants by June, which transplant easily and may support earlier and more generous flowering.

Planting out

Plant young plants into their final position in summer, in June or July. By then they have a well formed root system and adapt quickly, producing lush, deep green growth.

Spacing

Space plants at 30 x 30 cm. This gives each plant enough light and room, supporting healthy growth and abundant flowering. Group planting also creates a natural looking carpet with minimal upkeep.

Flowering period

Broadleaf speedwell flowers from May to July, and the vivid blue blooms stay attractive on the stems for a long time. It is well suited to calm, balanced planting combinations. After flowering, trim the stems lightly to encourage repeat flowering and keep the plant looking tidy through the season.

Growing

Grow broadleaf speedwell in full sun, although it also tolerates light shade. It prefers free draining, moderately moist soil that is not too heavy. It is frost hardy and very long lasting, making it a dependable choice for natural style planting, perennial borders, and rock gardens. It needs little routine care, with watering during dry periods and removal of faded flower spikes helping it stay colourful for longer.
