White mustard (Sinapis alba) is an annual oil seed plant. It has been grown since centuries not only as for the raw material for oil, but first and foremost as a spice and material for the condiment mustard. It is also sometimes used in pharmaceutical industry. This species may be also used as fodder crop, because it develops large volume of green mass as an aftercrop. Due to its positive impact on the phytosanitary soil conditions it is an important part of the crop rotation. It significantly reduces the population of nematodes, including cyst eelworms, hence it is advised to rotate it with root vegetables and potatoes. It may also serve as green manure and supplies soil with nutrients, organic matter and improves soil structure.

White mustard grows best in lime, loamy and sand-loam soils. The compact and extremely loose soils are not suitable for cultivation of this plant. These plants withstand drought and small frost very well. Sow mustard for the main crop as early as possible, yet the soil needs to be properly warmed up and dried after the winter. You may perform delayed seeding in case of cultivation for fodder or green manure. Seeds of the white mustard should be sown 10-15 kg per ha. In case of the aftercrop cultures, increase the sowing rate to 20-25 kg/ha.
