Yellow hoary stock "Excelsior" (Matthiola incana annua) is a charming, beautifully scented plant, that dazzles with its attractive blooms. It is usually grown in home gardens and allotments for cut flower. Long flowering stems end with a spike consisting of large number of double blooms. The stems may grow 50 - 60 cm tall. Tender, yet very decorative inflorescences take on subtle yellow colour. The delicate, beautiful aroma only adds to their charm and instantly brings the popular night-scented stock to mind, to which our hoary-stock is closely related. A bouquet composed of hoary stock maintains its great looks for a long time and will adorn your home for even two weeks.
Seeds of the hoary stock are sown at home in early spring. You may use production pots, seeding trays or mini greenhouses for that purpose. Cover seeds with a thin layer of soil and water regularly, yet in moderation. Young plants are transplanted to borders in May, short-term spring frosts will do them no harm. Choose sunny, wind-sheltered sites. Hoary stock requires loose, moist soil rich in nutrients and with a structure that allows for proper water flow.
