The pale pink "Erica" astilbe (Astilbe arendsii), sometimes called the false spirea, belongs to the vigorous varieties that delight with long, dense, fluffy inflorescences that take on a warm, pastel colour. This abundantly growing perennial reaches 100 to 120 cm in height. It blooms in July and August and remains ornamental outside the flowering period thanks to the denticulate, odd pinnate leaves. The "Erica" astilbe develops a dense tuft of erect, stiff stems that do not require supports and look great both on borders and on lawns, in company of ornamental shrubs, tall hosta varieties and ferns. We recommend to grow it in loose groupings at the edges of ponds and shaded paths in the less structured, informally arranged parts of the garden. Its pale pink, fluffy, ear-shaped inflorescences may be cut and put into vases.
The perennial plant offered in our store prefers partial shade and humus-rich, sufficiently moist soil with a slight acidic to acidic reaction. Numerous, vividly coloured flowers will develop at open, sunny sites, too, but would need more frequent watering there. The rhizomes of the "Erica" astilbe should be planted in the spring and left in the ground for the winter. It is worth covering the plants before the winter in order to protect the young, sprouting stalks from late spring frosts. The perennial offered here will grow and bloom reliably for years on a properly chosen site. As soon as it starts to bloom less abundantly, split the rhizomes and plant them again.
