The "Feuer" astilbe (Astilbe) with its red blooms is an excellent compact variety with ear-shaped, fluffy inflorescences that take on a distinct, scarlet colour. As a frost resistant perennial that prefers humid sites, the "Feuer" astilbe may be grown on borders, pond edges, in perennial and shrub groupings and shady garden corners. The cultivar that is available in our store grows up to 60 cm tall and reaches similar width. Its erect, branched stems are covered with decorative, smooth, odd pinnate leaves with denticulated edges and spiky tips. Long, dense, fluffy inflorescences consisting of myriads of tiny, red flowers, tower above the foliage. The flowering period of our fiery astilbe takes place in the first half of summer.
A sunny or partially shade site with moist, nutrient rich soil would suit this plant best. You may safely plant the rhizomes of "Feuer" astilbe, or false spirea, as this plant is also called, in clay or even waterlogging soil on the thick drainage layer. Due to the specific preferences, plants of this species feel great in company of ferns, hostas and other astilbe cultivars. The lower growing varieties, such as "Feuer' should be combined with taller ones, such as the pale pink "Erica", the purple-pink "Amethyst" or white "Diamant".
