The D'Egypte beetroot is a classic, valued variety known for its flattened, uniform roots with an intense dark red colour. When cut, light rings are visible, and the smooth skin covers juicy, delicate, and aromatic flesh. The above-ground part consists of a compact rosette of leaves in shades of green with red or purple veins. This variety yields reliably and evenly, and the harvested roots withstand storage well, remaining a valuable kitchen ingredient throughout autumn and winter.
Sow directly into the ground on a carefully prepared, weed-free site. For an early harvest, sow from the beginning of April. For a late harvest intended for storage, sow until the end of June. After sowing, maintain constant, moderate soil moisture, which is particularly important during germination.
Place seeds at a depth of 2-3 cm. This depth stabilises moisture and temperature conditions around the seeds, favouring even emergence.
Keep rows spaced approximately 40 cm apart. After emergence, thin the seedlings, leaving plants every 5 cm in the row. This space facilitates the free thickening of roots and a uniform yield.
Choose sunny sites with humus-rich soil that is moderately compact and retains moisture well. Clay and sandy-clay soils with a reaction close to neutral work best. Beetroot yields very well in the second year after manure application. The highest demand for water occurs during germination and intensive root thickening.
Seeds germinate from about 8°C. The optimal growth temperature is 15-18°C. Young seedlings are sensitive to frost, so the final harvest should be carried out before the arrival of autumn cold.
Keep the substrate free of weeds and water regularly, avoiding both drying out and waterlogging. Thinning and loosening the soil between rows limit competition for water and nutrients, and favour the formation of firm, shapely roots.
With early spring sowing, the first harvests are possible as early as July. From later sowings, roots are usually dug up in October. Harvest on dry days and store the crop in a cool, airy place.
This variety is ideal for direct consumption, salads, slaws, juices, and preserves, as well as for classic borscht. It withstands long storage well, making it indispensable in autumn and winter cooking. Young leaves work great as beet greens. The roots provide fibre, vitamins, and minerals, while the natural betanin is responsible for the intense colour.
