The Black calla lily (Zantedeschia) is an intriguing plant that can be grown in planters and in the garden. This beautiful plant that originates from Africa grows 30 to 60 centimetres tall. Its erect, straight stems end with dark, almost black, funnel-shaped inflorescences. The colourful spathes that look as if moulded of some durable metal, densely encircle the inner spadix (a cob-like cluster of flowers). The uniformly coloured, dark surface marvellously contrasts with the bright green, speckled leaves that sit on long, fleshy stalks. Calla lily is a plant that enjoys high popularity in European gardens. It is mostly used as decoration of pots and boxes placed in various parts of the garden or at the balcony. A calla lily arrangement is elegant, ornamental, and easy to grow. You only need to place some bulbs in a nice container to enjoy the tropical beauty in summer, from July to August.
Calla lily needs a humous, moist, yet properly drained soil. It develops best in the sun or in partial shade. It is sensitive to low temperatures. Therefore, you should dig out the bulbs in autumn and store in a room secured from frost until the next planting in spring.
