Blood sage (Salvia coccinea), also known as Texas sage, is an ornamental, quite tall perennial plant that is, however, grown as annual plant in our climate. It usually reaches 40 to 60 cm in height. Its slender stalks that branch out in the upper part, produce characteristic, vividly red flowers in June. Colourful ears tower over the rosettas of broad, flat leaves. This presented variety is not demanding, easy in cultivation and blooms exuberantly until end of September.
Seeds of the presented variety should be sown into pots or hot beds in spring. After thinning the seedlings with at least a few pairs of leaves can be transplanted to a sunny flower bed. The tall blood sage attracts attention through its distinctive build and abundance of vividly coloured blooms that create a great background for lower growing plants with large, daisy-like or double flowers, such as Milady asters, fiery calliopsis, colourful pelargonias and horned violets. Texas sage looks particularly attractive in larger groupings, i.a. in centres of park flower beds, surrounded by tufts of silver ragwort or low flossflowers with their lavendel-blue blooms.
