Dark blue mealycup sage (Salvia farinacea) is a perennial plant, usually grown as an annual plant in moderate climate. It creates erect, branched and at the same time compact stalks that end with spike-like inflorescences. Its name derives from the mealy coating of the flower buds, leaves and stalks. In summer we can enjoy its dark blue blooms, that last until the first autumn frosts. Sometimes the plants grow white flowers. In warmer regions the mealycup sage might survive the winter covered with dry leaves or hay.
Growing this plant does not present many problems and should be started with seedlings. The seeds should be sown into containers early in the spring and kept in a warm room. Young plants should be transplanted to garden in May, after the frosts are gone. Seedlings should be planted in 30-40 cm spacings. Dark blue mealycup sage blooms abundantly on sunny sites with a fertile, moderatly moist soil.
