Edging Lobelia - Crimson Red - Lobelia erinus - For boxes and hanging pots - Fresh Seeds

Edging lobelia Crimson Red is a stunning annual that brings rich colour to any planting. Its small but very numerous flowers in an intense crimson red form dense, colourful mounds. Thanks to its compact habit, it works equally well in the ground and in pots on a terrace or balcony. The well branched stems, covered in a sea of tiny blooms, make this lobelia a real highlight, adding freshness, energy, and an elegant finish to arrangements. It is ideal for flower beds, lawn edges, window boxes, and hanging pots, and it flowers for a long time, from early summer right through to autumn.

Sowing depth

Lobelia seeds are very fine, so sow them very shallowly at a depth of around 0.1 cm. Do not cover them with a thick layer of growing medium. They need light to germinate quickly and evenly.

When to sow under cover

The best time to sow is March. Use a light, free draining growing medium and keep it consistently slightly moist. Place the pots in a warm, bright spot, as warmth and light help produce healthy, even seedlings.

Planting out

Transplant lobelia into the ground or larger containers in May, once the risk of frost has fully passed. At this stage young plants establish well and quickly form compact clumps.

Spacing

Space plants at around 10 x 15 cm. This allows them to spread comfortably, flower evenly, and grow well without too much competition for water and nutrients.

Flowering time

Flowering runs from June to October. During this period the plants are almost constantly covered with small crimson red flowers that keep their strong colour and fresh look until the first cooler weather.

Growing tips

Edging lobelia grows best in full sun in fertile, humus rich soil that stays slightly moist. It does not like drying out, so regular watering is the key to long, abundant flowering. After germination, prick out the seedlings in small groups into pots or trays to give them space to grow. Once hardened off, plant them into their final position. It also performs very well in containers, bringing dense, vivid red colour to balconies and terraces throughout the summer.
