Carmine-red edging lobelia (Lobelia erinus), also known as garden or trailing lobelia, is an attractive and reliable annual plant. It produces compact, round tufts consisting of branched stalks. It grows low, only 10 - 15 cm tall. It dazzles us with myriads of tiny, carmine-red blooms that develop all summer long. These colourful pillows look great at border edges, in rock gardens and planted as background for other plants. You may use them in compositions set up in boxes and pots.
Lobelia seeds are sown in early spring to containers or boxes placed inside. The seeds are so small that they should not be covered, and the soil needs to be light and well prepared. Seedlings are pricked to small pots or into seeding trays, a few per each pot or hole, after a few weeks. Lobelias are transplanted to the garden afer the risk of frost is over, keeping 15 - 20 cm spacings between the tufts. Edging lobelia prefers sunny sites with a rich, humid soil. It requires watering in the hot months. This plant will reward you for your care with abundant blooming.
