Dahlia requires a sunny spot, as it needs six to eight hours daily exposure to direct sunlight to produce strong buds in large numbers. Dahlias are usually planted late in spring, after the Ice Saints. This is because plants are sensitive to cold. Setting the right planting date is the key factor in successful cultivation of dahlias. Impatient growers can always go for early cultivation in pots. This method, called forcing, requires you to plant tubers in pots and letting them develop until May in a bright and moderately warm room. Strong seedlings are then transferred mid-May to the permanent site in garden. After the vegetation season is over, around mid-October, dig out dahlia rhizomes of the ground. Let them dry, clean of the remnants of shoots and excess soil, and store in a room where temperatures are cool, yet always above the freezing point.
