Dahlia-flowered zinnia "Violet Queen" (Zinnia elegans dahliaeflora Violet Queen), also known as the old maid flower, is a true border lady. You will not find another plant with such wonderful, lush, pom-pom-like inflorescences that additionally take on a splendid, vivid and unusual colour. The variety presented here usually grows 60 to 80 cm tall. Its erect, straight stems broadly branch out in upper parts. Large flower buds appear on them one by one to open already mid-June and continuously adorn the garden until the first frosts. The blooms can be used as cut flowers.
Seeds of the dahlia-flowered zinnia should be sown onto a hotbed and at home, under glass, in early spring. You might also consider direct sow on a sunny site with a quickly warming, fertile and moist soil. This presented species prefers humous, neither too heavy, nor overdrying soils. Gigantic, purple, double "Violet Queen" inflorescences with contrasting, bright yellow centres look simply great in company of other dahlia-flowered zinnia varieties with lighter petals, such as "Canary Bird", "Polar Bear", "Scarlet Flame", "Envy" or "Eldorado". Long blooming peony, needle-petal and Princess asters also harmonise with the zinnias.
