The Polianthes Love scented tuberose is an attractive plant that produces dark pink, double, funnel-shaped flowers. Like other tuberose varieties, its flowers excrete a sweet, seducing scent. This fragrance encompasses notes of jasmine, lily-of-the-valley and citrus fruit. This unique blend is highly valued in the perfume and cosmetics industry. Apart from the industrial use, captivating smell of tuberose makes it worth planting near places of relaxation. This fragrant wonder of nature can adorn a gazebo, terrace, or flower beds outside windows. The slender habit and medium height of the plant - 60 to 90 centimetres - encourage you to integrate it into flowerbeds and borders.
The optimal time for planting tuberose in pots is March. Those tubers need plent of time time and a temperature above 20⁰C to germinate successfully. Do not plant too deep to help shoots reach the surface faster. Seedlings require a moderate, regular supply of water, enough to prevent them from drying, but not allowing for waterlogging either. Growing the rather demading tuberose requires some effort and skill. This species looks equally great in a garden and pot. It fares best at a sunny, warm, sheltered site. Provide tuberose with good quality, humous, permeable, quickly warming soil that remains moderately moist. Tuberose is very sensitive to cold. Planting or transferring seedlings outside is possible only after May 15.
Tuberoses are not able to endure central European winter. They need to be dug out of the ground, cleaned and stored in a dry place, preferably in sawdust, at a temperature within the 6 to 12⁰C range.
