The Sammy Russell daylily is an endearing perennial. Abundant tufts of arched, bright green leaves give daylilies a lush, compact, and broad habit. Leafless stems crowned with large, lily-shaped flowers appear above the foliage at the beginning of summer. The Sammy Russell daylily produces orange-red flowers with slender, velvety petals. Distinct colour of the flowers is additionally underscored by a warm, bright orange colour spreading from the very inside of the calyx. Edges of the petals can be slightly wavy, which only adds to their unique charm. This trouble-free plant reaches about 80 centimetres in height, making it ideal for planting in larger beds, on the edges of the plot, or in groups by buildings. Profusely blooming daylilies can be used as cover or to decorate surroundings of a pond or a tiny stream. Daylily is a species that fits into naturalistic plantings in English and rural gardens.

The daylily's requirements are very limited. Despite its beauty, this plant does not require much time or care. Sunny or slightly shaded positions are suitable for the cultivation of daylilies. The less sunlight the plants receive, the less flowers they produce. Moderately fertile soil would be enough to let daylily rhizome develop. This species likes moist soil, but it is not a must. It is enough to water the plant during periods of prolonged drought. Daylilies do not need much feeding. After you planted them in a well-fertilized ground, they would require a second round of fertilizing next season.
