The "Rogowska" fodder turnip (Brassica rapa L. var. rapifera Metzg.) is a biennial plant from the Brassicaceae family. It had used to be a popular vegetable long time ago until potato replaced it in our daily diet. Right now it is mostly grown as stubble-field catch crop. It provides valuable animal fodder, fed most commonly to the grazing animals due to its lactagogue properties.

Trnip plant develops a rosette of entire or dentate leaves that sit on long petioles. The foliage is covered with coarse hairs. Turnips develop storage roots it is grown for. The variety offered here produces round, slightly flattened purplish-white roots.

Turnips do not have high soil requirements. They grow well on loam-sandy, fertile and weeded soils. It does not tolerate drought and needs large amounts of water. The "Rogowska" variety does not like acidic soils and is resistant to low temperatures. It grows quickly in autumn, even during colder years. Turnip should be sown in July until the beginning of August. It is commonly sown on ploughed stubble-fields, hence its common name - stubble turnip.

"Rogowska" variety provides a great catch crop and after crop material. It stores excellently in clamps until December, but it brings best results when fed to the animals directly on the field.
