The holy basil (Ocimum sanctum, syn. O. tenuiflorum), also called tulasi is a medicinal plant known and used for centuries in Southern Asia, and considered holy by the Hindus. It stands out with its vigour and ornamental value. It grows up to 100 cm tall, is broadly branched and its erect, straight stems are covered with oval, denticulated, dark or pale green leaves (depending on the given cultivar). Green parts, blooms and fruit of holy basil are edible and medicinal. They contain antiphlogistic and fungicide agents, relieve the pain and soreness and decrease fever. Their diastolic ability is also well-known. Thanks to them you would also lower the bad cholesterene and sugar level in your blood. Infusion made of the holy basil leaves helps to fight diseases of the respiratory system and is recommended for stomach pains. Fresh and dried leaves are used as an aromatic seasoning to sauces, meats, egg dishes, fish and cheese.

The plant offered in our store has simple requirements in regard to its cultivation. It needs a sunny, warm site with permeable, fertile, not too heavy soil. Although it is a tropical plant, it grows well in our climate when raised from seedlings.
