Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is a perennial, evergreen semi-shrup coming originally from the Mediterranean. You can grow it in pots, on a sunny windowsill or on a balcony, where it would parallelly act as herb and ornamental plant. Its needle-like, olive green leaves and unlignified stem ends exude pleasant, spicy aroma. Blue or violet flowers bud from the leaf bases from March to May.

Rosemary is above all an important seasoning herb in Mediterranean cuisine. Rosemary stems are used to spice and fragrance meat, cheese, soups, sauces and vegetables. This plant is also used in herbal medicine. It contains vitamins C and A, flavonoids, essential oils, tannins and rosmarinic acid. Rosemary infusion may be used in flatulence and to regulate digestion processes. It also soothes, mildens pain, regulates blood pressure and acts as a diastolic. Rosemary oil is widely used in aromatherapy.

In our region rosemary is grown in pots, wintering in bright, unheated rooms (max. 10°C). You may cultivate it in the open - in gardens, rockeries, on edgings - at the seaside. You ought to, however, protect it from the cold in the winter. Rosemary should be planted on sunny sites in deep containers in standard soil mixed 1:1 with sand. Rosemary seeds are sown from April to May to boxes or pots. Before the sow seeds should be placed for a week in a fridge. Rosemary emergence take up to 4 weeks. Young seedlings require regular watering, while the mature plants do not need much water. This plant achieves its seasoning properties from June to September. Rosemary grown in pots grows 50 cm tall, opposed to 120 cm in gardens. We advise to top the branches to stimulate stronger branching.
