Red kale "Sympatic" (Brassica oleracea var. sabellica) is an interesting variety producing dark purple leaves that may adorn your garden even in winter. "Sympatic" belongs to medium late varieties. This plant develops strong, densely leaved stem that may grow 60 - 70 cm tall. Frizzled leaves take on vivid, red, dark purple colour, what enables you to used this kale as an ornamental plant. The leaves are a treasure of protein, contain large amounts of vitamins, folic acid among others, and minerals. Kale may be consumed raw in salads, cooked or roasted, as addition to vegetarian and meat dishes, soups and casseroles. It may be harvested in winter after it has been left in the field. Frozen kale does not lose any of its assets, but would only be more delicious, tender in taste and devoid of bitter aftertaste.
Kale may be grown from seedlings and direct sow to the field. This vegetable acts great as main crop and aftercrop. You may sow kale under covers from March until June, while in case of the open field cultivation you should postpone the sow by one month. Valuable leaves may be harvested continuously from August to December, because this plant withstands frost up to -18°C.
