"Carel" winter onion (Allium fistulosum) is a variety standing out with its productivity. It may be successfully grown all vegetation season long. Winter onion is a perennial plant that does not develop distinct bulbs, but is grown mostly for chives and small, tender tasting bulba. High resistance to frost and after-harvest durability belong to the most important advantages of this plant. "Carel" variety produces impressive, dark green, long, erect chives. White, rather long bulb may also be used in the kitchen. This vegetable is often sold bundled in spring and intended for direct consumption.
Winter onion is grown from direct sow onto the field. Its seeds are sown from spring to summer in rows 30 cm apart. It may also be, however, cultivated from seedlings that should be transplanted outside in June. You may harvest crops from June to December and if you cover the plants with soil, you will get longer white bulbs. This onion needs a sunny or partially shady site. It will yield best crops in fertile, permeable, moderately moist soil.
Each package contains 1 g of the "Carel" winter onion seeds. Growing instructions and the sow-by date are included in the package information.
