Bitter Melon, also known as Bitter Gourd, is an annual plant in the gourd family, with a long branched trailing stem. Around two months after the seeds have been sown, its aromatic yellowish flowers begin to appear. All the portions of the plant that grow above the soil can be used as a vegetable or for medicinal purposes. The young fruit, which grow to 10 centimetres in length, are often used as a delicious seasoning to meat, vegetables or salads. Raw, they are a little bitter in flavour, therefore it is best to prepare them according to various recipes to obtain the best flavour. The leaves, sprouts and flowers can be boiled for a tasty spicy vegetable. Bitter Melon fruit are traditionally used as a diabetes medicine in India, as they contain an element, which acts very similarly to insulin. The medicinal properties of the element have been confirmed by medical research.

Growing: sow the seeds indoors in pots (7 to 8 centimetres in diameter) at 22-24°C, in late April. Plant out the seedlings that have developed 4 to 5 leaves into the soil in 100x60-80cm spacings in the second half of May; it is recommended to stake them. Grow the plants in covered sunny positions in moist fertile soils.

Each packet contains two grams of seeds.
Each packet includes a growing guide and a sow-by date.
