Butter daisy (Melampodium paludosum) is a charming relative of the popular asters. This plant is characterized by its ornamental, round and rather compact habit. It is a low growing plant, the height of its fully developed, branched stems does not exceed 35 cm. The stems are tightly covered with small, juicy green, spiky leaves. Numerous flower heads consisting of sunny yellow tongue-shaped petals and similarly coloured centres appear between the foliage already in June. Bright, colourful tufts retain their ornamental value until the first frosts.
Seeds of the star daisy, as this plant is also commonly called, should be sown in early spring into pots, boxes, indoor greenhouses and hotbeds. The seedlings with a few pairs of leaves are than transplanted to larger, decorative containers or into open air after the last spring frosts. We recommende to grow this compact annual plant in thick groupings at edgings, at the front of flower beds and in containers. Butter daisy loves the sun and requires a moderately fertile, permeable soil. Thanks to a long blooming period, lovely habit and beautiful bloom colour it forms great partnerships with asters, zinnias, snapdragons and other species with tiny blooms in contrasting colours, like cupflowers (Nierembergia) or Venus' looking glass (Legousia).
