Butter Daisy - Melampodium paludosum - Light airy colour for borders - Fresh Seeds

Butter daisy (Melampodium paludosum) is a charming annual that brings bright, sunny colour soon after sowing. It grows to around 30 cm and forms neat, rounded clumps with dense foliage in a rich, fresh green. Its main feature is the golden yellow flowers that look like tiny sunflowers and add a cheerful touch to borders, path edges and containers. It flowers continuously through summer until the first autumn frosts, making it a great choice if you want long lasting colour with little effort. Seeds are available from GardenSeedsMarket.

Sowing depth

Sow the seeds shallowly to a depth of about 0.3 cm. Use light, moist soil to support quick germination and healthy young plants.

When to sow under cover

Start sowing under cover from January to March, preferably in small pots, trays or mini greenhouses placed in a warm, bright spot. In these conditions, seeds germinate evenly and seedlings grow strong.

Planting out

Move plants to their final position in May, once the risk of frost has passed. The soil should be warm and slightly moist to help them settle quickly and grow well.

Spacing

Space plants at 30 x 30 cm so each one can spread freely and form a dense carpet of flowers. Planting too closely can reduce flowering, so correct spacing is important for the best display.

Flowering period

Butter daisy flowers from June to October. For many months it stays covered in yellow blooms that catch the eye and brighten planting schemes.

Growing tips

This plant grows best in full sun and in free draining, moderately fertile soil. It copes well with summer heat and short dry spells, which also makes it suitable for pots and containers in sunny places. Seeds sown in early spring germinate quickly, and young plants can form their first flower buds after a few weeks. It combines well with other plants, for example blue lobelia or white begonias, for a fresh, sunny look.
