Castor Oil Plant - Green-leaved - Ricinus communis - Bold palm like foliage, decorative flower clusters - Fresh Seeds

Castor oil plant, green-leaved (Ricinus communis) is a striking annual with a broad, vigorous habit that brings an exotic, almost tropical feel to garden planting. It can grow up to 2 metres tall, with large, palm-like leaves in an intense green that create a bold focal point. In summer it produces small flowers, followed by decorative, spiky seed pods that add an unusual finish and extra interest. This plant works well as a strong specimen, as a backdrop in borders, or as a contrasting feature alongside lower annuals.

Sowing depth

Sow the seeds 2-3 cm deep. This depth provides good conditions for quick germination and healthy seedling development.

When to sow under cover

Sow under cover in early spring, from March to April. This gives young plants time to establish roots before planting out, and within a few weeks seedlings become strong enough for further growth outdoors.

Planting time

Plant out in May, once the soil is warm and the risk of frost has fully passed. This timing helps the plants settle quickly and grow strongly through the summer months.

Spacing

Leave about 100 cm between plants. With this spacing, the broad leaves have room to develop without shading each other, and the overall planting remains balanced and attractive.

Flowering period

Green-leaved castor oil plant flowers for a long time, from July until the first autumn chills. During this period, the distinctive spiky seed pods appear at the tops of the plants and become a standout decorative feature.

Growing tips

Grow castor oil plant in a warm, sunny position sheltered from wind. It prefers fertile soil that stays moderately moist and is rich in nutrients. Water regularly during dry spells to support lush growth and strong leaf colour. As a plant with tropical origins, it does not tolerate cold, so wait to plant out until night temperatures stay above 10 C. It can provide an excellent background for flowering annuals or act as a natural screen in the garden. Please note that castor oil plant is poisonous, especially the seeds, so handle with care, particularly where children or animals may be present.
