The 'Saturnus' cobra lily (Chasmanthe 'Saturnus') owes its unique name to the inflorescences that are shaped like snakes' heads. This montbretia relative originates from southern Africa and develops orange-red long flowers that are lined in rows at both sides of the stems. The light green sword-shaped leaves add a contrasting accent to the plants. The anthers that stick out from every flower bring snake's tongue to mind. The exotic fiery coloured flowers appear on the plants from June to August. These erect plants grow from 50 to 100 centimetres tall. The loose inflorescence ears excrete a pleasant aroma. This plant is recommended for cultivation in gardens and pots.

Chasmanthe prefers full sun or partial shade and sandy permeable soils. The site where it is supposed to grow should be rich in nutrients. The appropriate drainage layer proves to be crucial for the successful growing of this plant. Compact soils might lead to rotting of the underground parts. You can use an admixture of sand and gravel while planting.

The corms of the offered lily variety should be planted in sprint. April - May is the right time to perform this task. Put the rhizomes 10 to 20 centimetres apart. You can begin with the fertilization when the stems appear. Water the plants when you notice that the soil starts to dry out. Remove the wilted flowers, leaving the foliage intact. This species is not hard and the corms need to be excavated in autumn and stored in temperatures above the freezing point (5 to 10⁰C) until next season.
